Kyoto eSIM: Arriving through Kansai
Kyoto has no airport of its own, so Kansai International Airport is the usual way in. Your eSIM should already be sitting on the phone by the time you get there. It carries data across the whole of Japan on the Softbank and KDDI networks. The plan's days wait quietly until your first connection is actually made.
13 plans for Japan, from 500 MB at $1.99 to 20 GB at $21.99, plus 6 unlimited-data tiers. 5 GB for 30 days costs $9.99 — 6th cheapest of 29 in Asia, against a $10.99 median. Our retail prices from the operator catalogue, checked 13 September 2026.

Arriving through Kansai International Airport
A different arrival airport changes none of the setup you have to do yourself. Download the profile at home, where Wi-Fi does that part of the work for you. After you land, turn data roaming on for the eSIM line by hand. That same line then has to be selected as the one carrying mobile data. Only at that point does the first-usage clock begin, running from that connection onward. Android wants wbdata entered in the APN field, and an iPhone wants nothing typed at all.
Which plan for Kyoto
Pick by the number of nights in the city rather than by gigabytes. Japan's ladder started at 500 MB over seven days and topped out at 20 GB over thirty, checked 5 September 2026. Unlimited lengths cover three, five, seven, ten, fifteen and thirty days. Airalo listed the 2 GB fifteen-day plan at $5.99 on 5 September 2026. The five-day unlimited pass sat at $16.99 on the same date. Two days of temples and a fortnight of train travel ask for very different rungs. Coverage reaches the whole country, so a run out to Osaka or Nara costs nothing extra. Top-ups are bought online, and the balance sitting on the eSIM does not expire.
The Japanese rule behind the eSIM
Kyoto sits under national law, and that law leaves this kind of profile alone. No confirmed trap turned up on the Japan country page for a data-only eSIM. Act No. 31 of 2005 puts an identity check ahead of any voice line sale. This profile carries no voice service, so that check never reaches as far as you. You register nothing locally in order to bring the eSIM online.
From Kyoto to Hokkaido on one profile
Coverage runs the length of Japan, so a rail day out costs nothing extra. The Japan entry names Okinawa and Hokkaido inside the same plan. Kansai is only the door you came in through, not a boundary. The line carries on working wherever the trains take you next. No second profile is bought for a leg outside Kansai. That reach was read on the Japan listing, checked 5 September 2026.
Before you fly to Kyoto
- Kyoto has no airport of its own, so arrivals come through Kansai (KIX).
- Recharges are bought online, and the credit on the profile carries no expiry.
- The Japan entry records no confirmed trap for a data-only profile.
