Airalo Review: Where Installs Actually Fail

What we checked, and what we did not test

We have not run our own multi-country connectivity test on Airalo. We say so instead of writing around it. What we verified ourselves, with a date: Airalo’s Turkey product page was live when checked on 10 August 2026 ( airalo.com/turkey-esim ), and Airalo’s app was still listed in the Turkish App Store the same day. Both checks establish only that the product is still reachable for a Turkey buyer. Neither is a connectivity test.

Is Airalo trustworthy enough for a Turkey trip? That splits into axes, not one score. Support, documentation, refunds and regulatory exposure move on their own, and this Airalo review checks each one instead of averaging them. Other Airalo reviews open with a device count. This one will not, without a trip log to back it, and it will not lean on an aggregate Trustpilot rating or App Store score either. A star average answers a different question than where does it break, and can I fix it before I fly. The Airalo disadvantages documented below come with a source, a date, and, where one exists, a fix.

The record comes from one fully-read thread on r/Airalo: u/Worldly_Sprinkles904’s “DO NOT USE AIRALO” post, 4 July 2024, plus 24 comments running through March 2025. Three more comments come from r/istanbul, dated 23 January 2026. Five other r/Airalo threads with titles like “Airalo Fraud” and “Is Airalo down?” exist and have not been read in full; we flag that gap rather than let a one-thread sample pass as exhaustive.

Three failures and three clean runs out of six is not a reliability verdict. It is what a dated public record looks like when nobody smooths it before publishing it. The record also contains no coverage complaints: every failure logged above happened at setup, not after a connection was live.

What actually breaks — and where it breaks (at home, before you fly)

Installation is where Airalo fails, not the connection once a profile is live. All three documented failures happened at setup, not in the country. One profile had no IMEI to report back. One app rejected a reinstall as already used. One eSIM never activated. All three surface at home, before you board.

“Something went wrong during the original installation and the eSIM didn’t have any emei info to report back to Airalo.” [...] — u/blaughlin, r/Airalo, 4 July 2024

“I keep getting an error saying [...] 'this esim is invalid or it has already been used.' It doesn’t show up under my esims, I have a stable connection, I have restarted the phone.” — u/Bethechange_777, r/Airalo, 7 July 2024

Both failures have a known fix, and both are worth trying before support ever replies. Neither comes from Airalo: one is u/blaughlin’s, the other u/cybersurfr’s, who says of his workaround, “It has worked for me A LOT of times.” [...] ( r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 ) Both are set out step by step in the install section of the Turkey eSIM guide .

The install stage is the one point in this chain where a written guide can stand in for documentation Airalo does not provide. Answering someone who called the whole pattern user error, u/BigFatBlackCat put the verdict plainly:

“It’s possible for them to explain it so a five year old can understand, but they don’t. I don’t consider that user error. That’s on Airalo.” — u/BigFatBlackCat, r/Airalo, 5 July 2024

Support: the one complaint nobody disputes

Support is the one weakness in this record that nobody argues against, not even Airalo’s own defenders. u/cybersurfr trusts the app enough to hand it to non-technical parents. Even so: “Absolutely Love Airalo [...] but I acknowledge their cust service is garbage.” ( r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 ) Two more accounts, eight months apart, land on the same word. u/OldScruff calls the support articles “useless” and says they “contain incorrect and incomplete troubleshooting steps” ( r/Airalo, 8 February 2025 ). u/Salt-Requirement-993 calls the channel “0 service[,] A bot service who don’t do anything” ( r/Airalo, 21 March 2025 ).

One channel does answer. Chat and ticket replies stall in this record; Instagram and email do not. u/[deleted] got a reply “within a couple hours” through Instagram ( r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 ). u/BigFatBlackCat reports the same for email: “For some reason I got pretty quick responses through email.” ( r/Airalo, 5 July 2024 ) If you need a customer support response from Airalo, that is the channel this record points to — not a promise it will be fast.

This is the one axis content on this page cannot fix. We can name the channel that answers and roughly how it compares to the ones that don’t. We cannot answer for Airalo at 2 a.m., and no guide can.

Refund escalation script — what to do, in what order

Three levers move an Airalo refund, in this order. State in writing that you intend to post a public review. If that stalls, keep emailing the same thread rather than opening a new one. If both fail, ask your card issuer for a chargeback. “Contact support and wait” is not one of them. No account in this record cites the written refund policy; what worked was pressure, not policy.

The clearest documented case: u/Worldly_Sprinkles904 paid for a Greece eSIM that never activated, spent a week running every troubleshooting step Airalo’s chat offered, and was refused a refund ( r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 ). The same day, an update:

“I sent a new email saying I was going to write a review on Reddit and they responded within 5 minutes…. lol. Interesting how that works. They offered me a refund finally.” — u/Worldly_Sprinkles904, r/Airalo, 4 July 2024

On the first lever, the wording decides it: state the intention plainly, not as a threat dressed up as a question. On the second, u/BigFatBlackCat’s account of what worked is blunt: “I insisted over and over until they finally did it.” ( r/Airalo, 5 July 2024 ) On the third, u/SurstrommingFish needs no elaboration: “Just chargeback them with your bank.” ( r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 )

One check before step one: who you actually paid. A link that sends you to Airalo’s own checkout makes Airalo the merchant of record, and this script applies directly. A purchase routed through a separate reseller’s own payment page adds that reseller’s refund terms on top of Airalo’s. That reseller vs direct purchase distinction decides who owes you the refund. Check the card statement before you escalate to either party.

Airalo vs Saily vs Holafly for Turkey — on the regulatory axis

Price is not a stable enough axis to build this comparison on. In the same thread, a brand defender checked competitor pricing mid-conversation. The defender reversed an earlier claim within a day, calling the new numbers “a complete opposite” of what they had found two months before ( u/bpbp216, r/Airalo, 4-5 July 2024 ). Whatever the gap was that week, it moved before the thread even closed. This section compares on something that does not move week to week: regulatory exposure.

Airalo, Saily and Holafly all sit on the same BTK blocklist wave dated 10 July 2025 — the same exposure, not three different risk profiles. The pattern inside Turkey is app blocked but profile works, and it is the same for all three. The full dated blocklist and the mechanism behind it live on our BTK ban explainer ; this page reproduces neither.

What that means for choosing between the three: nothing, on this specific axis. None of them is safer to buy for a Turkey trip than the others. None of them prevents top-up failures once your data runs out and you are already there — the trap is covered in full on the BTK page , and it applies to all three equally. Whatever decides it for you sits on the install and refund axes above, not on which blocked provider you picked.

The honest counterweight

Most commenters in the very thread titled “DO NOT USE AIRALO” report that Airalo worked fine for them. “I’m still a customer with 6 esims on the go. No issues in the last month across: China, HKG, Japan, EU, UK and Canada.” — u/Puslinch-Komet, r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 . u/blaughlin, who hit the install error above on a different trip, says: “I have several Airalo eSIMs that I use constantly without any issues.” [...] u/bpbp216 put the pattern in one line: “I still believe they have thousands of satisfied users, they just forget to post their experiences here.” [...] (both r/Airalo, 4 July 2024 )

That is the real shape of this Airalo review: not a broken product, a wide spread of outcomes. Most installs go through clean on the first try. When one doesn’t, you are troubleshooting alone against documentation the same thread calls unfit for a five-year-old, with a support channel that answers on its own schedule, not yours.

Here is what changes with content and what does not. The install-stage failures above happen at home, before you fly — exactly where a written guide reaches you and Airalo’s own app does not. The refund order above turned a week of silence into a five-minute response, once, on the record. Support stays as slow as that record says it is, no matter what you read first, and no guide can promise the one bad install will not be yours. If you have not bought anything yet, the Turkey eSIM guide covers buying and installing before you land — where every fix on this page has to happen anyway.
