MDMS in one pass: what registers itself, and what a travel eSIM never touches

Nepal’s Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) has run since 15 September 2022 (Nepal Telecommunications Authority). A phone that clears customs on entry registers itself in MDMS on its own. No counter, no form. NTA’s notice — dated 2080/01/30 in the Nepali calendar, roughly mid-May 2023 — says it directly: “मोबाईल सेटहरू MDMS प्रणालीमा स्वतः दर्ता हुने.” Manual registration covers a phone that slips past that automatic pass. It needs a passport with entry and exit stamps, or a boarding pass. A travel eSIM for Nepal does neither job. It roams data onto a Nepali network and performs no action inside MDMS, registered or not. The 15-day claim NTA never made

Nepal’s national English daily and the regulator’s own notice don’t describe the same rule.

The Kathmandu Post reported on 14 May 2023: “All foreigners entering Nepal are required to register their mobile phone sets, if they stay in Nepal for more than 15 days.” That sentence only makes sense if a shorter stay is exempt.

A separate site disagrees. namastesindhupalchowk.com wrote on 23 February 2024: “Foreigners who have come to Nepal, have to register mobile phones in MDMS.” No day count. No exemption stated.

The claim predates the notice, too. A TripAdvisor thread ran the same 15-day framing on 26 December 2022, five months before the notice above existed.

The notice text we sourced carries no 15-day threshold. No grace period. No tourist exemption. It states two things: customs-cleared phones register on their own, and everyone else registers by hand with a passport or boarding pass. Neither clause mentions length of stay. That doesn’t rule out an exemption in some other document we haven’t found — it means no source, primary or secondary, pointed us to one.

The gap matters most on a trip running close to or past two weeks. A three- or four-day Kathmandu and Pokhara stop rarely nears 15 days. A 12- to 18-day trek to Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit often does. Trust the notice’s own text over the blog claim: register the phone, or carry the passport pages showing the entry stamp.

The wall works the usual way. Fixed-GB runs out of data first if usage is heavy. Unlimited runs out of days no matter how little gets used. A multi-week trek, with sparse charging and sparser signal, tends to use less data than a city stay of equal length. A 5 GB or 10 GB fixed tier likely covers a trek better than three unlimited blocks.

Activation is first-usage, not purchase (Airalo catalog data, checked 12 August 2026). The clock starts once the profile connects to Ncell, not the day it’s bought. Installing at home and activating after landing costs nothing.

Before you fly: install, confirm, save a backup

Install the eSIM profile before departure, on a connection you trust — airport wifi is not that connection. Airalo delivers a Nepal eSIM as a QR code, scanned from a second device, or a direct install link opened on the phone itself. Either way needs internet access first.

Confirm the install before boarding, not after landing. Open the phone’s settings and check the profile shows as installed. Save the QR code and confirmation email as a backup; that copy makes a mid-trip reinstall easier.

Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked before you leave. A locked phone can’t add a second network profile, travel or local — that’s a call to the home carrier, not a fix available at the airport. Switching on roaming earlier, on a home network, risks only a stray roaming charge. Expect a short wait before the first page loads, longer in a crowded arrivals hall.

Dual SIM: running the Nepal eSIM alongside your regular line

An eSIM for Nepal runs alongside a second line two ways. Pair it with a physical SIM in the phone’s tray, or a second eSIM on a handset built for two active profiles.

Set the Nepal eSIM as the data line. Leave the home line for calls and texts. Pairing the eSIM with a second line solves calls and texts — but not with a Nepali number. Anything that verifies you by SMS to a Nepali number sits outside what this product does. So does a service tied to a Nepali-registered line: a permit desk that texts a code, a ride-hailing app that needs a local number at sign-up. That gap needs a separate Nepali SIM, with its own registration steps.

Coverage: Kathmandu and the valley vs. the Everest and Annapurna circuits

Coverage on an eSIM for Nepal runs on Ncell’s network alone, because Patancell is Airalo’s only Nepal operator (Airalo catalog data, checked 12 August 2026). Inside the Kathmandu Valley — Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur — that’s the LTE footprint local subscribers use daily. It’s dense enough for daily tourist use: sightseeing, hotels, restaurants, the airport.

Outside the valley, coverage follows Ncell’s own map, thinning with altitude and distance from a road. Cold affects the connection less than it affects the phone carrying it. Lithium-ion batteries lose power fast near freezing, and above 3,500-4,000 metres on the Everest or Annapurna routes, that’s the daytime norm once the sun drops behind a ridge. A phone reading 40% charge in a warm teahouse drains fast in a cold jacket pocket. A dead phone has no signal at all, whatever the tower strength — battery management matters more than coverage on most trekking days.

Charging options thin out the same way coverage does. Lodges in Namche Bazaar and Lukla charge a fee to top up a phone. Smaller teahouses higher up may run solar panels or a generator switched on for a few hours after dark. Charge a power bank fully before the trek, and top it up whenever mains power is on offer.
