Indonesia’s IMEI rule, in one line

Compare the two tiers by what limits them, not by feature count. The unlimited tier’s ceiling is time: full speed holds until day count runs out, throttling only past 3 GB in a single day. The fixed-GB tier’s ceiling is data itself. No daily throttle, but the plan ends once the allowance runs out, however many days remain. A heavy week of video calls and turn-by-turn navigation favours the unlimited side; a longer trip with lighter daily use favours stepping through the fixed-GB tiers instead.

Before you land: install, label, then wait to activate

Install the Indonesia eSIM before departure, on a working Wi-Fi connection, not at the gate. Airalo delivers the profile as a Quick Response (QR) code or a direct install link, and both need internet access to complete (Airalo, checked 12 August 2026).

The QR code needs a second screen to scan from, if you’re installing on the same phone you’ll carry to Indonesia. A laptop, a printed copy, or the confirmation email open on another device all work. The direct install link skips that step, opened straight on the phone itself. Screenshot the QR code and save the confirmation email regardless of which method you use; a phone that later needs the profile reinstalled will ask for both again.

Set up any account that needs local SMS verification before the trip, on a line that can actually receive it, or use email or an app-based verification path once you land.

When data doesn’t come up after landing

Work through four checks before assuming the profile itself failed.

Confirm data roaming is switched on for the Indonesia line specifically, not just the phone’s master toggle. A phone can show roaming enabled overall while the Indonesia profile’s own per-line switch stays off. Toggle airplane mode on and off once there’s a signal bar; that forces a fresh network search instead of leaving the phone stuck on a weak first attempt. On a phone running the Indonesia eSIM alongside a home SIM, confirm the Indonesia line is actually set as the data line. The two are easy to swap by mistake in cellular settings.

If none of that fixes it, check the Access Point Name (APN). Airalo’s Indonesia profile uses the APN value “globaldata” — entered automatically on iOS, and needing manual entry on some Android builds (Airalo catalog data, checked 12 August 2026). If the profile shows as installed but data never starts, and the automatic configuration didn’t take, set that value by hand under the eSIM’s mobile network settings.

If it still won’t connect after all of that, restart the phone once. A fresh boot re-triggers the network handshake and clears a stuck registration attempt that a toggle alone sometimes doesn’t. That’s the last general step before it becomes a case for Airalo’s support rather than a settings fix.

None of this is an IMEI or customs problem. A profile that won’t connect is a network-settings issue, not an import one — a roaming eSIM never enters Indonesia’s customs process to begin with.

Coverage: Bali, Java, Lombok, the Gili Islands

Airalo’s own coverage note for an eSIM in Indonesia lists Bali, Java, Lombok and the Gili Islands by name, adding that coverage is “not only” those four (Airalo, checked 12 August 2026). Airalo names four places; it does not claim full coverage everywhere in the country. Treat the four as a floor, not a ceiling. Java is Indonesia’s most populous island and includes Jakarta, so business travel to the capital falls inside the same named coverage area as a Bali holiday. No island-by-island or city-by-city signal report backs anything beyond that stated list. For a route through a smaller island, or a remote stretch of Sumatra or Kalimantan, the operator’s own coverage map is the better check before you fly. Outside the four named areas, treat hotel or venue Wi-Fi as the fallback, not an assumption.

A Bali-to-Lombok-to-Gili itinerary doesn’t need a second profile at either stop. The Indonesia eSIM isn’t tied to a single island, unlike a physical Indonesian SIM card’s local registration. It’s one profile, roaming across whichever of the two networks reaches you — the same as it does in Bali. What changes between islands is signal strength, not eligibility.

Indonesia isn’t the only destination in this guide where a device rule gets confused with a mobile-network one.
