Istanbul eSIM: What to do the moment you land at IST

An Istanbul eSIM connects only once data roaming is switched on for that line. Do that after landing at Istanbul Airport, or at Sabiha Gokcen over on the Asian side. Activation is first-usage, so the days you paid for begin at that connection. The home SIM stays put and goes on handling your calls and text messages.

Where this profile does not reach:This eSIM does not cover Northern Cyprus.

Landing at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gokcen

Both Istanbul airports leave you with the same single job once you are on the ground. Switch data roaming on for the eSIM line, then let the phone attach itself. The profile runs on Turk Telekom (Avea), the only partner network on this plan. Android needs the access point name typed in by hand, and globaldata is the value. Top-ups are bought online, and the profile carries no expiry, checked 5 September 2026. Northern Cyprus falls outside this coverage, so a crossing over needs its own plan.

Which plan for Istanbul

For a week in the city, the workhorse plan is 5 GB over 30 days. That plan carried a $6.99 price tag in the Turkey catalogue on 5 September 2026. Turkey's ladder holds fifteen plans: nine fixed sizes against six unlimited windows. The fixed side reaches as far as 50 GB over 30 days at the top. A separate 15-day window holds its own 10 GB and 20 GB fixed blocks. Unlimited windows run 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days here. Below the workhorse sit the 1 GB, 2 GB and 3 GB fixed blocks.

Turkey's IMEI rule and the 91-day line

Turkey's IMEI rule reaches you only after 91 accumulated days of eSIM data use. The count runs inside any 120-day period, so a two-week holiday sits nowhere near it. Cross that line and the phone's IMEI must go on Turkey's CEIR register, with a one-time tax attached. Buying on arrival is the sharper problem, because eSIMs are not sold inside Turkey at all. A regulator has blocked the storefronts of around 52 sellers as well. A profile installed before you land goes on working through the whole of that.

Adding data once you are inside Turkey

More data comes from a top-up, because eSIMs are not sold inside Turkey. Recharges are bought online, and the profile itself carries no expiry date. A regulator's block on seller storefronts is why we raise this before you fly. Northern Cyprus stays outside the coverage whatever you add to the plan. A crossing there needs its own profile, bought the same way. Nothing else about the line changes with a recharge, checked 5 September 2026.

Before you fly to Istanbul

  1. Turkey's CEIR register only reaches you past 91 accumulated days in 120.
  2. No eSIM is sold inside Turkey, so more data comes from an online top-up.
  3. Northern Cyprus falls outside this profile and needs its own plan.
