Make a travel eSIM last

A plan runs out from what the phone does on its own, not from what you open. Six switches decide most of it. Set them once on the eSIM line before you fly, and a 5 GB plan covers a week of maps, chats and photos.

Low Data Mode · Data Saver iPhone: Settings → Cellular → the eSIM line → Low Data Mode. Android: Settings → Network → Data Saver. One switch that tells every app to hold back.
Background App Refresh iPhone: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Wi-Fi only. Android: per app under Mobile data → Background data. Feeds and mail stop refreshing on cellular.
Automatic downloads and updates App Store → Automatic Downloads → Wi-Fi only; Photos → Cellular Data off. A system update over the eSIM is a gigabyte gone.
Wi-Fi Assist iPhone: bottom of Settings → Cellular. Off for the trip: weak hotel Wi-Fi otherwise silently hands over to the eSIM.
Video autoplay Instagram, YouTube, TikTok: autoplay on Wi-Fi only, quality set to lower. Video is the only thing that empties a plan in an evening.
Offline maps Google Maps and Apple Maps download a city at the hotel; navigation then costs almost nothing.

How much is enough

Sizes are in the calculator, built from published per-hour rates with their sources, and every country page sizes four usage patterns against that country's own plans. The short version: a week of maps and messages fits in a gigabyte; add photos and scrolling and it is three to five; video every evening on mobile data is an unlimited plan.

data_usage What does Low Data Mode do on iPhone?

It tells apps to hold back: no automatic downloads and backups, no background refresh, lower quality for streaming and FaceTime, photos stop syncing over cellular. Settings → Cellular → the eSIM line → Low Data Mode. Android calls it Data Saver.

wifi Does Wi-Fi Assist eat mobile data?

Yes, quietly: when hotel Wi-Fi is weak the phone switches to cellular without asking. Settings → Cellular → scroll to the bottom → Wi-Fi Assist off for the trip.

calendar_month How much data does a week need?

Maps and messaging, about a gigabyte. Everyday scrolling with photos, three to five. Video every evening on mobile data, an unlimited plan. The calculator sizes it against the country's own plans.

chat Will messages and calls still arrive?

Yes. Low Data Mode limits background traffic; messages, calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime and anything you open by hand work as before.
